Sarnia residents now have access to a more sustainable end-of-life option as McCormack Funeral Home transitions to its new identity: McCormack Aquamation, Burial & Cremation Services. The George Street facility is the first provider in Canada to acquire specific alkaline hydrolysis equipment sourced from the United Kingdom. Alkaline hydrolysis, commonly referred to as aquamation, serves as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional flame-based cremation. The process uses a solution of 95% water and 5% alkaline chemical, combined with heat, to break down the body. This method mimics natural decomposition but at an accelerated rate.

The shift reflects a broader movement toward green burial practices that prioritize the reduction of carbon footprints. Traditional cremation requires significant energy and releases greenhouse gases, whereas aquamation is noted for its lower energy consumption and lack of harmful emissions.

"By introducing alkaline hydrolysis, we provide families with a choice that reflects their commitment to the environment and sustainability," said Funeral Director Cameron McCormack. He noted that the process offers a respectful and dignified alternative for those seeking gentler methods of disposition.

The benefits of this new service include:

  • Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions compared to flame cremation.

  • Conservation of fossil fuels and natural resources.

  • A gentle process that utilizes water rather than fire.

McCormack Aquamation, Burial & Cremation Services has operated in the community for over 85 years at 254 George Street. While they continue to offer traditional funerals and burials, the addition of aquamation marks a significant change in how local institutions are addressing climate impact.

Residents interested in learning more about the process or the environmental science behind alkaline hydrolysis can contact the facility at 519-383-7121 or visit the website at www.mccormackfuneralhomesarnia.com. The introduction of this technology positions Sarnia as a leader in sustainable funeral practices within the province.
