According to the Sarnia & District Humane Society, all cats from the property have now been surrendered and are being removed in stages to receive medical attention and care. The Humane Society is working with Provincial Animal Welfare Services, Sarnia Police Service, City of Sarnia Bylaw Enforcement, and other humane societies and rescue groups across Ontario to manage the large intake.
The Humane Society said the process will take time as staff continue to feed, water, and transport the cats safely.
The organization is requesting donations of hanging scratching posts, chicken pill pockets, catnip, non-clumping clay litter, large uncovered litter boxes, low-edge porcelain or stainless-steel feeding dishes, and elevated cat beds. Monetary donations are also being accepted to assist with veterinary expenses. Donations can be made directly at the shelter or online.
In addition, Lambton Cat Rescue has confirmed it will oversee care for approximately ten outdoor cats remaining on the property.
Lambton Cat Rescue stated that it first became aware of the situation on November 4 after receiving a report of multiple cats around the home. Volunteers attended the property and, after observing dozens of cats inside, contacted Provincial Animal Welfare Services and local police.
Animal Welfare officers later confirmed that the indoor cats would be surrendered to the Sarnia & District Humane Society. Lambton Cat Rescue has volunteered to trap, provide veterinary care, and foster the outdoor cats with approval from Animal Welfare.
Both organizations are asking for community support in the form of supplies and donations to help manage the large number of animals now in care.
