Peter Kapteyn died peacefully on October 23, 2025, at St Joseph’s Hospice after a brief illness. He was surrounded by his beloved wife Joan and his children and grandchildren at the time of his death. Peter is survived by his wife Joan, children Erica (John) deWit, Raymond (Ann) Kapteyn, and predeceased by his son William Kapteyn, who died in 1984. His grandchildren are Matthew deWit (Amy), Andrew deWit (Any), Joel deWit, Anneke Kapteyn-Zhao (Wei), Peter Kapteyn, Andre Kapteyn and great-granddaughter Ainsley deWit. Peter was the dear brother of Lex (Jenny) Kapteyn, Bill Kapteyn, Mary Rekman, Erie (Willi) Veenendaal, and Margo Brett. He was predeceased by his sister Judy Kapteyn and his beloved son Bill. Peter was a man of deep Christian faith who was eager to pass his faith on, not only to his children and grandchildren, but also to the young people he taught and mentored throughout his life. He lived out his faith in acts of service as well, serving with World Renew’s Disaster Response Services and making repairs to the homes of “the old people”, even when he himself was 85 years old. He was a loving husband and father, always verbally expressing his love and appreciation for those around him. His gentle and humble demeanor endeared him to many. Peter has left a mark on Sarnia through his construction company, in buildings such as St. Michael’s Church in Brights Grove and Residence on the St. Clair on Front Street. Peter was married to Joan for 68 years, and their marriage was a source of joy and a model for their family members and all who know them. The family wishes to express their thanks to the staff and volunteers of St. Joseph’s Hospice for the skilled and loving care they gave Peter and his family in his last days. We give thanks to God for the beautiful life and legacy of Peter Kapteyn. Family and friends will be received at Smith Funeral Home – London Line Chapel, 1576 London Line, Sarnia, on Friday, October 31, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held at First Christian Reformed Church, 1105 Exmouth St., Sarnia, on Saturday, November 1, 2025 at 11:30 a.m. Sympathy may be expressed through donations to St. Joseph’s Hospice (cheques only at the funeral home please).
