In an era dominated by dating apps and digital profiles, a new event is coming to Sarnia to bring romance back into the real world.
Pitch-A-Friend Southwestern Ontario is set to host its first-ever event this Thursday, October 16th, at Imperial City Brew House, offering a unique and interactive alternative to the endless swiping that defines modern dating. The concept is simple: instead of crafting the perfect bio, your friends do the talking for you, highlighting your best qualities in a live presentation.
The idea came to Sarnia resident Blair Abbey in the fall of 2024 while scrolling through Instagram. She discovered the original Pitch-A-Friend event in Philadelphia, created by a woman named Melissa at a local brewery.
"I remember thinking, ‘This is brilliant!’ — it’s like a fun icebreaker event without the cringe of a typical singles night," Abbey explained.
She reached out to the founder about bringing the concept to Canada and immediately thought of Imperial City Brew House as the perfect local venue. After connecting with owner Rina, the idea took a brief pause over the winter.
Momentum picked up again in the summer of 2025 when another local, Jamie, approached the brewery about hosting a speed-dating night. Rina connected the two, and together they secured the Pitch-A-Friend franchise for the Southwestern Ontario region.
The event aims to combat the feeling of disconnection often associated with dating apps by focusing on genuine human interaction.
“There’s something irreplaceable about human energy — about eye contact, body language, and the shared experience of being in a room full of possibility,” Abbey said. “Apps can show you pictures, but they can’t show you chemistry.”
She believes the format allows for authentic personalities to shine through, free from curated profiles and filters. “It also adds that beautiful layer of accountability — when your friend stands up there pitching you, it comes from love and authenticity. There’s no pretending… just genuine connection and good vibes.”
Abbey hopes to create an atmosphere that feels like “walking into a wedding reception where everyone somehow knows each other.” The goal is an inclusive, supportive, and slightly electric environment focused on fun and laughter rather than pressure.
“I want people to leave saying, ‘That was such a good time — I forgot dating could feel like that,’” she added.
For those stepping up to the mic, Abbey offers some simple advice: speak from the heart and add a dash of humor.
“You don’t need to oversell your friend — just highlight the things that make them shine in real life,” she advised. “Think: the quirks that make them lovable, the values that matter, and maybe a funny story that gives everyone a glimpse into who they really are… You’re not selling your friend; you’re celebrating them.”
Beyond matchmaking, the organizers see Pitch-A-Friend as a way to strengthen Sarnia-Lambton’s social fabric. Abbey envisions it sparking new friendships and fostering a greater sense of community belonging across the region.
“Sarnia has so many incredible people who just need spaces to connect outside of their usual circles,” she said. “Even if someone doesn’t find romance, they might leave with new friends, new confidence, or just a really good story to tell — and that’s a win in my books.”
The first Pitch-A-Friend SWO event takes place Thursday, Oct. 16th at 7 p.m. at Imperial City Brew House. The event is free to attend, all ages (21+), and is LGBTQ+ friendly.
