The Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery (JNAAG) is set to celebrate First Friday, October 3, 2025, with the simultaneous opening of two major new exhibitions, showcasing powerful and compelling artistic voices: Larry Towell: Boundaries and John Williams: Debwewe Giizhik | (sound in the distance) from the sky.
Visitors are invited to attend the opening starting at 6:00 p.m. on October 3, where they will have the opportunity to meet both featured artists.
Larry Towell: Boundaries
October 3, 2025 – March 14, 2026
World-renowned photographer Larry Towell, who was raised in rural Lambton County, brings four decades of internationally acclaimed work back home in this sweeping retrospective. Boundaries showcases Towell's deeply humanist vision, exploring universal themes of land, landlessness, and survival through global conflicts and everyday resilience.
The exhibition features selections from his most celebrated series, including The Mennonites, The World From My Front Porch, El Salvador, No Man’s Land, Afghanistan, and his recent work, The History War, which documents Ukraine’s fight for independence. Beyond photography, a dedicated listening room highlights Towell's talents as a poet and musician, featuring original ballads and recordings that expand his narrative approach.
Towell will also host a free two-part artist talk series in October:
Thursday, October 9: Walking Through Stories, a guided tour of the exhibition offering personal insights into his work.
Thursday, October 30: Life, Land and Lens, a multimedia presentation weaving together photography, music, video, and spoken word.
John Williams: Debwewe Giizhik | (sound in the distance) from the sky
September 5, 2025 – May 31, 2026
Ojibway artist John Williams presents his first solo exhibition in a public gallery with a striking mural installation located in JNAAG’s lecture theatre. Working primarily in acrylic, Williams skillfully blends realism with the iconic Woodland style, exploring themes of daily life, cultural teachings, and spiritual symbolism. His art is both contemporary and traditional, working to preserve Indigenous stories and perspectives through a vivid visual language.
Visitors can hear directly from the artist during In Conversation with John Williams on Saturday, October 25. Williams will share his journey from childhood sketching to completing major community commissions, and reflect on the cultural and personal inspirations behind his powerful mural.
All artist talks are free, but registration is required. To register or for more information, visit jnaag.ca or call the Gallery at 519-336-8127.
