October marks Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, an important time dedicated to supporting families who have experienced the grief of losing a baby. For thousands of families in Ontario, this reality is often endured in painful silence. The Valeria Fund is actively working to break that silence, ensuring that no one has to navigate their loss alone.

Founded by Lo-Anne Chan in memory of her daughter, Araminta Valeria Chan, The Valeria Fund advocates for increased awareness and vital support services for those impacted by pregnancy and infant loss. Lo-Anne Chan notes that during her own journey, the constant care from medical professionals was crucial: “They knew that they could not take away our pain, but they would be there to support us through the journey.”

In Ontario, October 15th is officially Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day. In recognition, landmarks across the country participate in the International Wave of Light at 7:00 PM local time. This year, the City of Sarnia will show its support by illuminating City Hall and the Sarnia sign in purple.

The Valeria Fund invites the community, whether a parent, grandparent, sibling, or friend, to gather for two commemorative events this October to find connection, share stories, and honour the babies they hold in their hearts.

Upcoming Community Events:

1. Finding Meaning After Loss

This gathering offers a safe, compassionate space for adults (18+) to connect and share stories. Lo-Anne Chan, founder of The Valeria Fund, will lead a conversation on gentle practices for "Creating Meaning in the Absence of Memories," helping to weave a child's presence into life. Registered Social Worker Carlyn McNally will also be present for support.

2. Wave of Light Ceremony

Join us for a memorial ceremony to acknowledge all babies lost through miscarriage, stillbirth, and infant death. Candles will be lit as the community participates in the International Wave of Light at 7:00 PM. All affected families are welcome to attend and are invited to stay after the ceremony for quiet reflection.

The Valeria Fund strives to unite a community of support and raise awareness for the ever-present need for physical and mental health supports following pregnancy and infant loss in Lambton County.
