Welcome to the climate café!

In an effort to transform climate anxiety into hopeful community action, Climate Action Sarnia-Lambton invites Sarnians to pull up a chair at the city’s first-ever “Climate Café.”

Want an opportunity to enjoy a coffee and relax with some friendly people who love living on this planet as much as you do and want to ensure future generations can enjoy it too?

Why not drop into Sarnia’s first "Climate Café" on Sunday, October 5th at 2 p.m.? The café will open its doors at the Great Lakes Refill store at 454 Christina St. N. to welcome you. It’s not an actual café, but it will feel just as welcoming, and the coffee will be delicious.

Canadian climate scientist Katherine Hayhoe has often pointed out that the best way for people to become better informed about climate change is to come together and talk about it. What should we talk about? Anything on your mind about what is now commonly referred to as global heating.

Do you understand why the planet is warming? How does this warming compare to periods in the past, and why is the fossil-fuel-driven change of today so different? Do you experience anxiety or confusion about what is happening and wonder what can be done? Are you alarmed by the devastating wildfires across Canada and the trauma they cause to communities? Are you concerned by the extreme temperatures this past summer that killed thousands of vulnerable people?

And locally, do you grieve for the loss of Sarnia’s snow-filled winters that motivated children to play outdoors, build snowmen, go tobogganing, or skate on backyard ice rinks?

If so, you might want to find out if others share the same concerns and how they are addressing them.

People of all ages have questions about the impacts of climate change and what should be done. Are you a young person experiencing “eco-anxiety” and concerned about what the future will hold? To be unable to look to the future with confidence and hope is to deny any chance of happiness.

Community and conversation can lead to possible solutions and generate greater hope and optimism. So please come and join the Climate Café to become better informed and to discuss what is being done and what needs to be done. Let’s build a community of understanding, support, and meaningful actions.

Coming together is the important part. So why don’t you make a date to join me and others at the Climate Café on October 5th!
