Heat warning extended as temperatures remain high across Lambton County

An Extended Heat Warning was issued July 28 as hot, humid conditions continue to pose health risks across Lambton County.

With high temperatures continuing into the week, Lambton’s Medical Officer of Health has issued an Extended Heat Warning for the region.

The warning follows ongoing heat conditions in the area and is triggered when a heat warning persists for more than two days — a period during which the risk of heat-related illness increases, particularly for vulnerable populations such as older adults, young children, individuals with chronic health conditions, outdoor workers, and those without access to air conditioning.

"During periods of high heat and humidity, the body may struggle to cool itself, leading to heat exhaustion or even heat stroke," said Dr. Karalyn Dueck, Medical Officer of Health for Lambton County.

Residents are advised to stay hydrated, wear light and breathable clothing, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and seek out cool indoor spaces. Friends, neighbours, and older family members should be checked on regularly.

Several cooling centres are open in Sarnia to provide temporary relief from the heat:

  • Bright’s Grove Library, 2618 Hamilton Rd.

  • Clearwater Library, 1400 Wellington St.

  • Sarnia Library, 124 Christina St. South

  • West Lambton Community Health Centre, 429 Exmouth St.

  • The Inn of the Good Shepherd, 115 John St. (including weekend hours)

  • Sarnia-Lambton Rebound – The Hub, 350 Indian Rd. S. (for youth ages 12–24)

These sites operate during regular business hours and do not provide overnight shelter or services beyond their usual offerings. Individuals in need of emergency housing support are encouraged to contact Ontario Works or The Good Shepherd Lodge.
