Finally reunited with the love of her life Bev Elgie, on Thursday, July 24, 2025, Deborah Carol Elgie (Scaman) passed away at the age of 68. Loving mother of Shey-Lynn (Chad) Vanderkloet, Kelly (Rick) Caudle and Scott (Natalie) Elgie. Cherished Maama of Kyla (Brett), Brennan (Jade), Nolan (Sophia), Presley (Tommy), Jaxon, Grasyn, Roslyn, Madison, and Nolan (Lili). Great Maama of Oaklynn and Slade. Dear sister of Barry, Wayne, Rick, Sandy, Diana and Barb. Special sister-in-law of Dwayne and Becky Elgie and Tina and Steve Verbeke. Lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents Jack and Jean Scaman, her siblings John Scaman, Roy Scaman and Sharron Korroll, and in-laws Bev and Marilyn Elgie.
What began at just 14 years old blossomed into one of the greatest love stories ever lived. Married young—at 16 and 17—on October 6, 1973, in Chatham, ON, Debbie and her husband built a life centered around their three beloved children. Debbie was a fierce protector with a heart bigger than the sky. She was unapologetically honest, deeply selfless, and never once put herself before others. Her home became a haven—not just for her children, but for their friends, extended family, and neighbors alike. Though she came from humble beginnings, you’d never know it by the boundless love she gave so freely.
She loved fiercely—almost as much as she loved a good burger (lettuce, mayo, pickles, and pepper always at the ready in her purse—don’t mess it up!). If she cooked for you, you were in; that was her way of saying “I love you.” We will miss her famous baked beans, that unmistakable cackle of a laugh, and the way she truly listened—always without judgment. We will miss those phone calls and texts asking what roast to buy and how to get the gravy just right. Sleep on mom. It’s time a go fuddie doe.
In keeping with Debbie’s wishes, a private graveside in Lakeview Cemetery will be held. Sympathy may be expressed through donations to the Sarnia & District Humane Society (cheques only at the funeral home please).
