A pilgrimage walk through the streets of Sarnia and Lambton County will take place Saturday, July 19, as part of the Jubilee 2025 celebrations at Our Lady of Mercy Church.
Parishioners from Catholic churches across the region are invited to begin their journey from their home parish and make their way on foot to Our Lady of Mercy, where a special noon Mass will be held. The Camino-style walk, modelled after the historic pilgrimages in Europe, is intended as a symbolic and spiritual journey of hope and renewal. A community barbecue will follow the service.
The walk marks the final day of a three-day celebration, from July 17 to 19, at Our Lady of Mercy Church, which has been designated a pilgrimage site for Jubilee 2025 by the Roman Catholic Diocese of London. Daily programming at the church includes Mass, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, and the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
The Jubilee, declared every 25 years by the Vatican, is a year of spiritual reflection and renewal. The theme for 2025, set by Pope Francis, is "Pilgrims of Hope," meant to inspire resilience in the face of global challenges such as war, climate change, and the lasting impacts of the pandemic.
“We are deeply honoured to have Our Lady of Mercy Church as a Pilgrimage Site for the Jubilee 2025, representing all our Catholic parishes in the Deanery,” said Leonia (Lee) Downie, Lay Ecclesial Minister. “Our Lady of Mercy Church becomes one of the Holy Doors during this Jubilee as a symbol of mercy, hope and renewal.”
