After nearly 30 years of service, Katherine Scimmi is retiring and transferring ownership of McKenzie & Blundy Funeral Home & Cremation Centre to Smith Funeral Home & Family Centre.

The transition will take effect August 29, 2025, with Smith Funeral Home assuming operations of the long-established Christina Street facility. The site will continue serving the community under the name Smith Funeral Home & Family Centre – McKenzie Blundy Chapel.

Founded in 1946 by Royal Canadian Navy veterans Donald McKenzie and Paul Blundy, McKenzie & Blundy has remained a fixture in Sarnia’s funeral service landscape, known for its service from a Victorian-era building and its commitment to supporting local families with dignity and care.

Scimmi joined the funeral home in 1997 as secretary before becoming general manager and, eventually, owner. She purchased the business from Grant McKenzie, son of co-founder Donald McKenzie.

“I’ve had the privilege of working alongside a dedicated team and serving families during some of their most difficult moments,” said Scimmi. “It has been an honour to uphold the values this firm was built on and to carry forward the legacy established by the McKenzie and Blundy families.”

Smith Funeral Home was established in 1980 and has been locally owned and operated by the Smith family since 2001. Today, it is run by Scott Smith and Emily Whitely.

“We are honoured to carry on the tradition of excellence that Katherine and her team have maintained at McKenzie & Blundy,” said Scott Smith. “Our shared values and strong community roots make this a natural fit, and we look forward to supporting families with the same trusted care.”

Both funeral homes have deep ties to the Sarnia-Lambton community and say the transition is designed to ensure continuity for families seeking personalized, compassionate service.
