Containment booms deployed after diesel leak at Imperial dock

Imperial Oil responded to what it called a “small diesel leak” at its Sarnia dock Tuesday night, deploying containment booms on the St. Clair River.

Imperial Oil deployed containment booms in the St. Clair River Tuesday night following a diesel leak from its dock at 602 Christina Street South in Sarnia.

In a public notification at 10:00 p.m., the company confirmed it was responding to a hydrocarbon leak at the dock. “The leak has been isolated and is no longer active,” the statement read. “Our spill response team is working to deploy boom. We will continue to update the community as more information becomes available.”

At 11:24 p.m., the company confirmed the leak involved diesel, and that the source had been “quickly isolated and confirmed stopped at 10:00 p.m.” Containment booms were deployed, and the sheen was reported to be fully contained. Recovery and clean-up efforts are ongoing.

“Precautionary downriver water quality monitoring has been conducted, and no detectable levels of hydrocarbon have been observed,” the company said.

The alert indicated that any necessary public instructions would be issued by the local municipality. None had been issued as of publication.
