This year marks the 55th. anniversary of the first Earth Day which was created by Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin. His intent was to mobilize support for better laws to protect the air, water and land from the effects of mainly industrial pollution. Twenty years later, in 1990, Earth Day had spread to 141 countries. In many places there were protests and marches to demand laws and other changes to protect people’s health and the environment from pollution, deforestation and other harmful practices.

Today, those efforts continue to be necessary and the challenges are intensified by the failure of countries to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions which are driving up the average global temperature and leading to catastrophic climate-related disasters.

If you care about living on a healthy planet and would like to learn some tips on ways to live more sustainably and joyfully then come to the downtown Sarnia Library on April 22nd – Earth Day! There will be many local organizations there to give you opportunities to learn new things, share eco-friendly ways to live well, exercise and have fun while saving on your energy bills and reducing your environmental footprint!

Would you be excited for example, to help paint a bench that will find a home on Sarnia’s new Mid-Town walking and cycling trail? Would you like to hear ideas on how to reduce your plastic waste? How about learning about the many ways the library can help you stay healthy and have fun in the outdoors with one of their sports’ kits or by visiting any of Ontario’s Provincial Parks with an entry pass provided free by the library?

The library’s “One Seed Lambton” program can help get you into gardening by providing heirloom seeds for some vegetables and herbs so you can grow your own healthy food and save money! Other gardening advice will be available too including what native plants are most suitable for this area. Carefully chosen plants will help attract birds and advice and other tips on how to be “bird friendly” will be shared.

There will certainly be lots to interest everyone. See the displays and meet the experts in the upstairs foyer and adjoining rooms between 6pm – 7pm. And as you are likely to work up an appetite there will be tasty and healthy snacks generously provided by Laura from Great Lakes Refill Co.

Participants taking part include nuSarnia Foundation, Lambton Wildlife Inc., Climate Action Sarnia-Lambton, Friends of the St. Clair River, Bird Friendly Sarnia, Golden Alexanders, Backyard Gardener and of course the Lambton County Library.

Following the displays and activities there will be a presentation in the library theatre at 7pm.

Theatre Presentation

“Heat Pumps, EV’s and more – what’s in it for YOU!”

Join engineers and environmental advocates John Ward and Ed Brost who will share the benefits and savings from installing a heat pump in your home and owning an electric vehicle (EV). John and Ed will also be willing to answer your questions.

So, make a date to celebrate Earth Day (April 22) from 6pm – 8:15pm at the downtown Sarnia Public Library – bring all your friends and family for an enjoyable, entertaining and informative time – a terrific way to honour and celebrate Earth Day 2025!
