OPP urges seatbelt use ahead of Easter weekend safety campaign

Sixty people died in 2024 on OPP-patrolled roads where seatbelts were not worn or not properly used.

The Ontario Provincial Police is urging drivers and passengers to buckle up as part of a seatbelt safety campaign running over the Easter long weekend.

According to the OPP, failure to wear a seatbelt was a factor in 60 fatal collisions on roads they patrol in 2024. Officers will be conducting roadside checks across the province to ensure proper use of seatbelts and child restraints.

“Being safely restrained in your seat is the safest place to be during a crash,” said OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique.

Ontario Solicitor General Michael Kerzner emphasized that wearing a seatbelt not only avoids a fine, but more importantly, “taking this simple step saves lives.”

Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria added: “Seatbelts save lives — it’s that simple.”

Officials also noted that airbags are not a substitute for seatbelts and that proper child seats should be based on age, height, and weight.
