It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Mary McLeay, age 81, surrounded by loving family, on April 4, 2025, at her beautiful home on the lake. Mary was born on July 14, 1943, in Windsor, Ontario, to Dora and Alexander Doumani, and she was one of eight siblings. She was predeceased by her brothers Joey, William, Frederick, and Joseph, and her sister Elizabeth. Mary is lovingly remembered by her dear and closest siblings, Richard and Alexandra. Mary was a devoted life long partner to Dawson Schreader, loving mother to Ian McLeay (Sharon) and Darren McLeay (Tina), and predeceased by her stepson Robin Schreader. She was a proud grandmother to Cassandra (Corey), Alicia (Lance), Hadyn (Krisha), Chase, and Mya, and a cherished great-grandmother to Sebastian, Morgan, Nala, Charlie, Rory, and River.
Mary’s spirit and generosity extended far beyond her family. She was a pillar of the Sarnia-Lambton community, dedicating countless hours to various causes and organizations. For 22 years, Mary served with distinction in the Rotary Club of Sarnia, where she held leadership roles, including president, and spearheaded numerous fundraising efforts that benefited the local community. Her commitment to service was also evident through her work with St. Michael’s Parish, the Catholic Women’s League, the Chatham Chamber of Commerce, and the Pathways Health Centre for Children. In addition, Mary was a board member of Moore Credit Union and contributed her time and energy to the Sarnia Sting by billeting players for many years. Her volunteerism was a true reflection of her boundless generosity and her deep-rooted belief in the power of community.
Mary was a beloved member of her Bible study group, a circle of women who shared her faith, wisdom, and love for life. These women, including Nancy, Cisca, Sylvia, Terry, and Judy, were a constant source of strength, support, and friendship to Mary, and she cherished the time spent with them. Also important to note are her lifelong companions Carol, Felicity, Marilyn, and Jean, who brought joy and laughter into her life. She formed meaningful, lasting relationships wherever she went.
Mary’s professional life was equally remarkable. She dedicated 34 years to Cooperators Insurance, where she began as a sales assistant and worked her way up to become a franchise owner. Known for her remarkable work ethic, Mary built strong, lasting relationships with colleagues, employees, and clients. Her leadership and dedication were evident in everything she did, and she was respected for her professionalism and unwavering commitment to excellence. Her ability to connect with people and inspire those around her left a lasting impact on everyone she worked with.
Mary’s unwavering love for her family, her friends, and her community shaped the lives of everyone she encountered. Her legacy of kindness, generosity, and tireless service will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Her spirit, warmth, and love will never fade.
