The Sarnia Police Service continue to receive numerous complaints, on a daily basis, from citizens who have lost large sums of money to cryptocurrency scams. The Sarnia Police have recently received a complaint where a citizen was coaxed into investing $750,000, over a period of time, with a scammer who was showing the victim fake information indicating that his investments had risen to $4.8 million dollars. These investigations are inherently difficult to undertake due to the disappearing messaging apps used, as well as untraceable financial transactions which are preferred by scammers.
Being contacted out of the blue through social media or messaging apps, such as Telegram or WhatsApp, about a Bitcoin investment is a major red flag. Scammers often use these messaging apps because they offer anonymity and make it harder for law enforcement to track them. Here’s what to watch out for:
Unsolicited Messages
Fake Investment Groups or Signals
High-Pressure Sales Tactics
Asking for Money Upfront
Fake Trading Platforms & Wallets
Romance or Social Engineering Scams
Poor Grammar & Generic Profile Pictures
