Eva Avalon Hamlin, nee Brown, passed away peacefully at St Joseph's Hospice, Sarnia on Saturday, December 7, 2024. She was born on May 10, 1944, in St John's, Newfoundland on the Avalon Peninsula, for which she was named and also Eva after her dear aunt Eva Babineau of Truro, NS. Predeceased by loving husband Fred Hamlin, and parents Vaughan and Jeanette Brown. Avalon is survived by her loving children Jennifer Hamlin (Allan Irvine) of Sudbury, and Craig Hamlin (Melissa Murray) of Halifax, NS; grandchildren Maria, Ella, Evie, and Finn; brother Robert; sister Veronica; nieces Jane, Laura, Deborah and nephew Matthew and their families. She relocated to Sydney, NS as a youth, and attended Riverview High School and subsequently Mt Allison University, Sackville, NB. where she graduated with a BSc majoring in Chemistry. Avalon lived in Halifax, NS after graduation, during which time she obtained her teaching degree. During one summer break, she and a girlfriend travelled extensively in Europe showing her voyaging spirit. During this time, Avalon developed a keen interest in environmental protection and gardening. She kept this interest for the rest of her life. Av ultimately moved to Sarnia where she taught in high school and met her future husband, Fred Hamlin. She has been blessed with many close friends and has been an active nature lover, master gardener, tennis and duplicate bridge player. Avalon’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at St. Joseph’s Hospice, where she spent her final days. Family and friends will be received at Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia, on Saturday, December 14, 2024, from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Sympathy may be expressed through donations to St Joseph’s Hospice or a cancer charity of your choice (cheques only at the funeral home please).
