It is with heavy hearts that the Aitchison family announces the passing of Ernie.
Ernie is survived by his wife, Wendy, their two children, Don (Sue) and Joanne and their three grandchildren, Cassie, Bradley, and Abby. He is predeceased by his parents, James and Ethyl, his brother Alec, and his sisters, Margaret and Marion.
Ernie was born in Stratford, Ontario, on May 17, 1946. He had a long and distinguished career as an engineer with CN Rail, retiring in 2005. He led an extraordinary life filled with adventure, laughter, and love. In his younger years, he enjoyed coaching baseball, fishing, and Manitoulin Island. Later in life, he enjoyed travelling with family and friends and was also an avid Euchre player, organizing many tournaments.
He was known for his words of wisdom, where to get the best deal and giving you many directions to get somewhere.
The family of Ernie would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the exceptional Doctors and nurses at both the hospital and the hospice for providing outstanding care to Ernie during his final days. Nancy, his PSW on telemetry, thank you for exceeding expectations with Ernie. We also appreciate the remarkable selfless devotion of PSW Renee, who consistently went above and beyond her duty not only for Ernie but for us as well.
Sincere gratitude to those who brightened Ernie’s life in healthier times and during his hospital and hospice stay. A special thanks to his nephews, nieces and friends. He knew he was cherished and love surrounded him.
A Celebration of Ernie’s Life will be held in the spring. Donations can be made to St. Joseph’s Hospice or the Sarnia Humane Society.
Holding your hand for the last time was the second most difficult thing I’ve ever had to do. Letting go of your hand for the last time was the first.
Forever in our hearts
