It is with broken hearts that we announce that Sydney Elizabeth Vrolyk passed away from Post Transplant Lymphoproliferative Disorder, surrounded by her loving family, on September 21, 2024, just 3 days after her 25th birthday. She was a ray of sunshine. She made people smile and she loved deeply and freely. She embraced her life and she lived for her family, friends and activities. She was the beloved daughter of Helen Van Sligtenhorst and John Vrolyk. Bestest sister of Paige and Abby Vrolyk. Cherished granddaughter of Margo and the late Gilbert Van Sligtenhorst and Arthur and Elizabeth Vrolyk. Bestie of Morgan D’Hooghe and loved fiancé of Owen Holubeshen. Sydney will be deeply missed by many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Sydney, a co-founder of Snacks for Summer alongside her sisters, also volunteered at St. Vincent de Paul with Valerie Barcoft. Passionate about sports, she thrived in the Special Olympics, specifically in basketball, bowling, and powerlifting. Every summer, she participated in Challenger Basketball, showcasing her competitive spirit. Sydney was destined for the stage. She thrived on the energy of singing and dancing, with a microphone always in hand. Being front and center with Stars of Tomorrow 21+ and in various productions was where she truly came alive, radiating passion and joy in every performance. Sydney loved music, and it was not uncommon to hear her belting it out every chance she could get, especially Carrie Underwood. Sydney was a dedicated volunteer, cherishing each opportunity to give back. She graduated from Confederation Central Public School and St. Patrick’s High School, where her vibrant personality shone brightly. Sydney was also a member of St. Giles Presbyterian Church. The family wishes to thank Dr. Stuart Smith, Dr. Ryan Davy, Grant Fisher, Melanie Dodds and all the nurses of the Multi Organ Transplant Unit as well as Dr. Stephanie Black of London Health Sciences. Family and friends will be received at Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia, on Friday, September 27, 2024 from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Smith Funeral Home on Saturday, September 28, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. As a family we are requesting people either wear purple (her favourite colour) or bright colours – Sydney LOVED colour! In lieu of flowers, sympathy may be expressed through donations to Sarnia Special Olympics https://soocommunity.crowdchange.ca/2164, Down Syndrome Association Lambton County or Sarnia Organ Donor Association (cheques only at the funeral home please).
