Bluewater Health has announced the appointment of Jane Mathews as the new chief nursing executive and vice-president of clinical support services.

Mathews holds a life-long career at Bluewater Health — beginning as a nurse 34 years ago, to most recently, her role as director, professional practice & patient experience.

She takes over for Shannon Landry, who announced her departure earlier this summer.

“I have dedicated my nursing career to Bluewater Health and am honoured to be joining Bluewater Health’s executive leadership team,” said Jane Mathews, Incoming Chief Nursing Executive and Vice-President of Clinical Support Services. “I am so grateful to have learned under Shannon Landry’s leadership over the last eight years, and hope to continue her legacy.”

In her new role, Mathews will be “instrumental in shaping the strategic and operational direction of the hospital, fostering a culture of kindness and ensuring the highest quality of patient and family-centred care,” the hospital said in a news release. “She will lead the expansion and enhancement of patient services, focusing on access, safety, quality, and sustainability.”

“We are grateful to the impacts Jane has made throughout her career and leadership at Bluewater Health,” said Paula Reaume-Zimmer, president & CEO, Bluewater Health. “Over the years, she has demonstrated her commitment to innovation, quality care, and a positive patient and family experience. I’m looking forward to having Jane join our exceptional group of executive leaders at Bluewater Health.”

Mathews earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice, Executive Leadership, from Post University – and her Masters of Science Nursing, Nursing Management and Organizational Leadership, from the American Sentinel University.

Earlier this year, she was published in the Journal of Nursing Education and Practice, for her work and research on the “Impact of Pressure Injury Education on Nurses’ Knowledge in an Acute Care Setting.”

She also sits on the Lambton College Board of Directors, as well as on the College of Nurses of Ontario Fitness to Practice and Discipline Committee.

Mathews will start her new executive role on September 3, 2024.
