Peacefully on May 17, 2024, at Trillium Villa, Ekkie Kremer (née Asselman, Kok) passed away at the age of 91. Beloved wife of Jack Kremer (2015) and Richard Asselman (1967). Loving mother of Lynn (Steve, 2009), John (Nancy), Coreen (Fred), Wendy (Joe), and Tom (Marley). Cherished Oma to Richard (Carly), Shaun (Amy), Stephanie (Justin), Jessica (Terence), Kevin (Kayla), Erik (Kaitlin), Nicole, and Brooke (Kristian). Adored Great Oma to Huxton, Jack, Westlyn, Ryleigh, and Hydi. Loving sister of Wiep (Ingrid) and sister-in-law, Griet. Predeceased by her parents Bartele (2006) and Maaike (1994), and her younger brother, Joop (2024). She will be lovingly remembered by many nieces and nephews in The Netherlands. Ekkie moved to Canada from The Netherlands in 1952. She and Richard married in 1954 and had a wonderful life in Canada. Though she was widowed too early, she found joy again with Jack. Ekkie and Jack married in 1971 and enjoyed many happy years together. Ekkie was a devoted member of the Christian Reformed Church for over 60 years, actively participating and volunteering. She also volunteered at Mission Thrift Store for over 25 years. Her career included roles at St. Willibrord, TD, and Union Gas. She also helped Jack with his Scales and Tails pet store. Ekkie enjoyed puzzles and crosswords, spending summer days at the beach, and taking long walks with her best friend Nel. She loved music by Andre Rieu, whom she was thrilled to see on the big screen a few years ago. Ekkie was a skilled swimmer and diver, winning contests in The Netherlands. A special thank you to Susan Schouten and Lydia Degroot for their exceptional care and kindness. We also extend our gratitude to the staff at Trillium Villa for their care and support during Mom’s time there. Family and friends will be received at Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia, on Thursday, May 23, 2024 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Smith Funeral Home on Friday, May 24 at 11:00 a.m. with an hour visitation prior.
