Three people were rescued from an apartment fire in Sarnia’s Mitton Village, Monday night.
Sarnia Fire Rescue Services (SFRS)said in a news release Tuesday that crews were called to the structure fire in the 100 block of Mitton Street around 8:19 p.m., with 15 firefighters from three stations responding.
“Upon arrival, SFRS crews noticed residents that could not exit safely due to the fire being in the building’s only stairwell,” officials stated. “Firefighters used ladders to rescue two residents from the upper storey windows and a third resident from the roof.”
"I'm very proud of the men and women of Sarnia Fire for their hard work rescuing three trapped residents and ensuring no fatalities,” Fire Chief Jeff Weber stated. “Fire crews used effective teamwork to simultaneously rescue the occupants and extinguish the fire in the building’s only exit preventing further property loss.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office and Sarnia Police Services in cooperation with Sarnia Fire Prevention.
