Flags on municipal property in the City of Sarnia will be lowered to half mast in memory of the late Andy Brandt, Sarnia’s mayor announced this week.

Brandt’s legacy in the community includes 20 years of political leadership as alderman, mayor, MPP and interim PC Party leader.

As a member of provincial parliament, he was instrumental in the development of the Sarnia Bay Marina (renamed after him in 2019) and was a long-standing member of its advisory board.

Brandt also played a major role in bringing Highway 402 to Sarnia, redeveloping the city’s downtown, raising millions of dollars for Lambton College as its foundation chair, and modernizing the LCBO, for which he served as chair and CEO for 15 years.

He served as Alderman on Sarnia City Council from 1971 to 1974 and as Mayor of Sarnia from 1975 to 1980. He began his career in provincial politics in 1981 holding the positions of MPP of Sarnia-Lambton; Minister of Environment, Industry and Trade; and Interim Leader of the Progressive Conservative Party.

In 2002, he was presented with the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal for his years in public service.

Brandt passed away at Bluewater Health on Dec. 22 at age 85.
