A 29-year-old Sarnia man was arrested in connection to a bank robbery this week, police say.

The incident occurred at the London Road CIBC Branch in Sarnia on Monday, Dec. 18, when a lone male suspect entered the bank, demanding cash.

“The male suspect was wearing a dark hoodie pulled up high and had a mask partially covering his face,” police said in a news release. “Members of the Sarnia Police Service located the suspect who was arrested without incident a short time later.”

The accused faces charges of: robbery; disguise with intent; and failure to comply with probation.

At the time of his arrest, the suspect also had outstanding warrants for: fraud under $5,000; possession of a debit card obtained by crime; use of property (debit card) with intent; and failure to comply with probation.

The suspect has been remanded into custody with a court date in Jan. 2024.

Police are reminding the public about what to do in the event of a robbery:

  • Do not do anything to provoke the suspect.
  • Call 9-1-1 as soon as it is safe to do so.
  • Lock the door and close the business immediately after the suspect leaves.
  • Do not let people walk over the area where the suspect travelled.
  • Do not touch or clean up anything that was disturbed.
  • Remain calm and try to remember what the suspect touched, whether they were wearing gloves, and which direction they fled.
