A CAER Code 8 was in place at Imperial Oil for several hours Wednesday following what the company said was a ‘partial power outage’ at the south Sarnia facility.

The Aamjiwnaang Notification System posted the CAER (Community Awareness and Emergency Response) Code 8 — which notifies of an ‘Internal emergency response event’ — shortly after 5 p.m.

An earlier alert from Imperial, around 4:30 p.m., said personnel were responding to a partial power outage at the site.

“As a result of the outage, there is elevated flaring and potential for noise to be heard offsite. We are working to return the site to normal operations,” the company said.

An additional alert noted that emissions from the site’s boiler stack ‘may be darker than normal.’

“Imperial does not expect emissions from the refinery to exceed government guidelines,” the company said in a statement. “Testing during similar past events indicates emissions have not exceeded health related air quality standards during those occurrences. Personnel are working to return the site to normal operations.”

The Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks was notified, officials added.

Meanwhile the all-clear for the Code 8 was issued shortly after 10 p.m., Wednesday.

No other details were provided.
