Two people have died in separate fires in Sarnia in the past week, officials say.
The most recent incident occurred Tuesday night when Sarnia Fire Rescue Services (SFRS) responded to a structure fire in the 100 block of Euphemia Street around 8:30 p.m.
Fifteen firefighters from three stations responded to the apartment blaze, along with Sarnia Police and Lambton EMS.
“Upon arrival SFRS crews entered the apartment and proceeded to the third floor because of smoke reported in the hallway,” a news release stated. “The firefighters noticed a door with heavy smoke around it and performed forcible entry to get into the unit.
“Immediately upon entry firefighters located an unresponsive occupant who was immediately removed and was taken to paramedics,” fire officials added. “Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire which was contained to a small area within the apartment unit.”
“Tragically the lone occupant of the unit did not survive. The Ontario Fire Marshals Office have been notified and will taking over the investigation.”
The death followed another fatal fire in Sarnia that occurred Saturday at a home on Napier Street, where one person was found deceased.
