The Sarnia Sting welcomed 15 players in the 2023 OHL Priority Selection held over the weekend, including first-round pick Ryan Brown.

The Newmarket, Ontario native and winger from the York-Simcoe Express U16 AAA team was the 17th overall selection, tallying 33 goals and 34 assists in 34 regular season games this season.

“Ryan is an electric skater who plays with a ton of pace,” said Sting GM Dylan Seca. “He shows skill in tight and can score. We also love his competitiveness and love for the game.”

We are thrilled to add Ryan and the Brown Family to the Sarnia Sting family.”

The Sting’s second round selection went to defence man James Barr of the Burlington Eagles U16 AAA team — marking the 39th overall pick.

The 6’0”, 152-pound right-hander from Oakville recorded seven goals and 31 assists in 36 regular season games, in addition to three goals and three assists through eight playoff games.

“James is a smooth-skating, right-handed shot puck mover. We see tremendous upside in his game and are excited to welcome the Barr family to Sarnia,” Seca added.

Sarnia’s final, day-one pick went to Lane Sim of the Weeks Majors U18 AAA team.

“The 5’5.5 centreman, who has Sting bloodlines, tallied 16 goals and 29 assists through 33 games played,” the Sting noted. “His father Jon Sim amassed 211 games played and 312 points with the Sting and was a member of the Club’s inaugural Hall of Fame Class.

“Lane plays with the competitiveness and skill that we covet here in Sarnia,” said Seca. “He is a scoring threat who can also create opportunities for his linemates.

“We welcome the Sim family back to the City of Sarnia.”

The Sting then used their first pick on day two of the Draft to add 6’0, 160-pound defenceman Hughston Hurst of the Detroit Little Caesars AAA program. A native of Oakville Township, MI, Hurst tallied three goals and 25 assists in 81 games played this season.

The Hockey Club finished the day adding 11 other prospects through Saturday.
