Though a place on the podium eluded Sarnia rugby player Julia Greenshields and weightlifter Boady Santavy at the Tokyo Olympic Games, both did well.

Canada’s hopes for a medal in women’s rugby sevens were dashed with a 31-0 loss to France on July 29. They finished the tournament in 9th place with a 2-2 record.

Greenshields scored on a try in Canada’s win against Brazil.

“Not the results we wanted, not the performance I wanted from myself,” Greenshields said in a Facebook post. “Although we didn’t walk away with a medal I’m immensely proud of our accomplishments. Time to heal, 3 more years til the next one, I’m not hanging my boots up yet.”

Santavy finished fourth in the 96-kilogram clean and jerk. He lifted a combined weight of 386 kg, missing the podium by just one kilogram.

Stomach issues were a factor for the weightlifter, his father and coach Dalas Santavy told the CBC.

“I know he was feeling a little bit sick during the snatch and clean and jerk and I really had to draw it out of him to get that performance, even as well as he did,” he said.
