Sarnia Police say the “soft launch” of a new collision reporting centre went well.

The centre received 177 referrals during the first month of operation, from June 11 to July 11. During that time officers also investigated 83 “on scene” collisions that fell outside its mandate.

The centre at Sarnia Police headquarters is set up to handle relatively minor vehicle collisions.

Officers are continuing to investigate crashes with injuries, property damage, criminal acts, and accidents involving city-owned vehicles.

The centre’s early success is allowing officers to enforce other traffic complaints and community issues, police said.

With the test period over, officers will no longer show up at fender-benders, and drivers will be directed to the centre if they call in.
