Money that a Marysville, Michigan man raised to compensate Sarnia for rescuing U.S. citizens washed ashore in the botched Port Huron ‘Float Down’ has now been distributed.
The city donated the $5,246 (Canadian) collected by Joe Wiedenbeck (net GoFundMe administrative fees) to a pair of charities: the local branch of the Canadian Red Cross and the Port Huron chapter of the Salvation Army.
As many as 1,500 Americans were blown ashore by winds on Aug. 21, prompting the deployment of police, transit workers and marine vessels to safely return them to Michigan.
Few of them were wearing lifejackets or carrying documentation.
