No one cares about south end neglect

Sir: I live behind the former SCITS high school and we have much going on in our area.

First, we had houses torn down to allow more parking at the senior’s complex, which is all fine and well. They owned the homes and needed the parking.

But we had many, many trucks and pieces of heavy equipment during the construction that destroyed the roads.

At the corner of Talfourd and Crawford you can actually see where the asphalt was dug down and pushed up by a backhoe – I saw it happen.

Then there’s the extra school busses from construction going on Devine Street, plus the doubled student population at Great Lakes Secondary.

With Talfourd Street and Devine being “fixed up” those heavy dump trucks and backhoes are travelling down Talfourd and Margaret streets.

The roads are absolutely horrible and are getting worse by the day.

Last week, a dump truck took the corner so fast the back wheel on one side lifted off the ground. I saw this happen.

If construction is happening in an area, all the affected roads should be repaired by the company that destroyed them. Residential streets are not made to have industrial machines and big-loaded dump trucks travel on them.

My street has been patched many, many times.  When it rains I make sure the street drain is clear, yet the water just lays at the end of my driveway and along my property.  My rates keep going up, yet the area is going into deep decline.

I see today that once again Indian Road north is getting a full resurfacing. There was nothing wrong with it, at least compared to the roads in the south end.

What can be done?

Nothing, because no one cares south Sarnia is in a decline because of selfish decisions that were made.

Shortly, we will see the closure of many businesses and there will be huge depreciation of the homes in this area.

Will our taxes go down? Biggest joke of the century this side of Wynne

Horticultural garden damaged by graffiti

Sir: The Sarnia and District Horticultural Society Garden, at 231 College Ave., was damaged by graffiti a few weeks ago. One of our large handcrafted wooden signs was painted over with white spray paint.

I was informed by police that there have been several similar instances in the city this year.

This garden is always open to the public, so we count on them to use it responsibly. Many people walk through every day and express their admiration and gratitude that this “oasis” in the centre of the city is available to them.

Almost all of our visitors respect the garden and would never think of doing damage. It only takes one disgruntled person to inflict damage.

The garden is ninety years old this year. It was initially leased, then bequeathed to the Horticultural Society by Maud Hanna, who was very active in the betterment of Sarnia. It is maintained by volunteers with help from the city. We welcome all visitors and their dogs.

Kind couple returned cell phone

Sir: This is a “thank you” to the young couple that found my cell phone on Aug. 6th.

I appreciate the extra effort it took to deliver the phone personally to my house, by using the contact list.
