Visitors can meet Regal Eagle, connect with conservation groups, and learn simple ways to help birds.
Bird Friendly Sarnia is inviting residents to celebrate the return of migratory birds with a free, family-friendly event this weekend at Canatara Park.
The local event, taking place Saturday, May 9 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Carriage House in Canatara Park, is being held in recognition of World Migratory Bird Day, an international awareness campaign focused on the protection of migratory birds and their habitats.
Observed annually on the second Saturday in May across Canada and the United States, World Migratory Bird Day highlights the long journeys millions of birds make each year through major flyways, including the Huron Shore Flyway along the Great Lakes region.
Organizers say the event is designed to be both educational and interactive, with activities for all ages focused on local conservation efforts and practical ways residents can help protect bird populations in their own neighbourhoods.
Visitors will be able to pick up copies of The Huron Shore Flyway (4th Edition), meet “Regal Eagle” for photos, and connect with local environmental and community groups working to support bird conservation across Sarnia-Lambton.
The event will also feature information on simple changes residents can make to create more bird-friendly spaces, including reducing window collisions, planting native species, and limiting unnecessary outdoor lighting during migration periods.
Migratory birds rely heavily on stopover habitats like those found along the Lake Huron shoreline, where they rest and feed during seasonal migrations that can span thousands of kilometres.
While World Migratory Bird Day is officially recognized twice each year across different regions of the world, organizers note that bird conservation is something communities can support year-round through local action and awareness.
The event is free to attend and open to the public.
