Lakeview Cemetery restores veterans section to mark 100th anniversary

Lakeview Cemetery and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 62 have partnered to restore the century-old Veterans Installation, ensuring the site remains a dignified and accessible place for Sarnians to honour local military sacrifice.

Lakeview Cemetery has completed a full restoration of its Veterans Installation to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the dedicated grounds. The project was made possible through a partnership with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 62 and Memorial Restorations.

The restoration work focused on both the aesthetics and the accessibility of the site. Crews completely refinished the installation’s flagpole and repainted the text on the central monument. Professional cleaners also revitalized the individual veterans’ headstones to ensure they remain preserved for future generations.

Beyond the monuments, the project included full landscaping improvements to the pavilion. These upgrades specifically included wheelchair-accessible improvements to ensure all members of the community can visit and pay their respects.

Keith Rabidoux, Lakeview Cemetery Board President, says the project is about respect, legacy, and responsibility. He notes that as the installation reaches the century mark, it was important to elevate the space so it reflects the dignity veterans deserve.

The restoration aligns with the Sarnia Legion’s own upcoming milestone. In 2026, Branch 62 marks 100 years of service to the Sarnia–Lambton community. Les Jones, President of Sarnia Legion Br. 62, says the centenary committee felt a strong responsibility to honour the personnel who paved the way.

The work is scheduled for completion by May 1, 2026. A commemorative ceremony will be held at Lakeview Cemetery to recognize the anniversary and the collaborative effort. Details for that event will be announced soon.

The Journal recognizes this restoration as an act of community-rooted stewardship. By moving beyond simple maintenance to ensure physical accessibility, these local institutions are actively preserving the human stories and sacrifices that define Sarnia–Lambton’s history.
