Red shirts and trishaws: Sarnia’s fifth annual Slow Roll returns to the waterfront

The fifth annual Slow Roll event invites cyclists of all ages to a 12-kilometre community ride that raises funds for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sarnia-Lambton. Organizers hope to break attendance records while offering a red-shirted spectacle along the St. Clair River.

The fifth annual Slow Roll event returns to Sarnia on Sunday, June 14, inviting community members to trade their couches for bicycle seats. The 12-kilometre family-friendly ride is free to the public and open to participants of all ages and abilities. This year, organizers are encouraging a sea of red by asking all cyclists to wear red t-shirts to create a uniform look throughout the group.

The ride begins and ends at the Royal Canadian Legion on Front Street. Starting at 2 p.m., the route takes cyclists along the waterfront to Exmouth Street, under the twin bridges, and through Point Edward to Canatara Park. To help those struggling to keep up, the group will double back along the same path, a strategy designed to reduce turns and keep the pack together.

Safety is a priority for the event, with escorts provided by both the Sarnia Police and the Point Edward OPP. More than 20 volunteer cycling marshals will accompany the riders to manage the flow. For those who encounter mechanical trouble, Blackwell Cycle staff will be on hand at the Legion for minor repairs, and a sweep truck will follow the ride to pick up cyclists with broken bikes.

The Slow Roll is hosted by the Bluewater Cycling Organization, which also operates the Cycling Without Age program. This initiative uses specialized trishaws to ensure seniors and individuals with special needs can participate in the festivities. Three trishaws will be in operation during this year's event, allowing residents who cannot cycle themselves to remain part of the community action.

While participation is free, the event serves as a major fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sarnia-Lambton. This year, three local donors have pledged to match the first $5,000 in registrations and donations. This matching gift could result in $10,000 to support programs for children and youth across the community.

Organizers are aiming to break their previous record of 600 participants. The ride is designed to be inclusive, previously hosting cyclists as young as 3 and as old as 90. Local performers will provide entertainment along the route, and the Legion will host a post-ride gathering with food, beverages, and a secure bike corral for participants.

Interested participants are asked to register online at https://www.ourbco.ca/slow-roll. Those attending should arrive a few minutes before the 2 p.m. start time to ensure a prompt departure.
