Dennis Johnston, known as Deni to friends and Dad and Papa to his family, passed away leaving behind a life rich in love, laughter, and lasting friendships.
Born in 1941 in Burwash, Ontario, Dennis was the only son of Edith and Creighton Johnston. He spent his early years playing hockey on a pond with lifelong friends before moving to Wingham, where he met the love of his life, Waverley, and formed many cherished friendships, including becoming an honorary member of the Douglas family. Dennis was a devoted husband to Waverley, a proud father to Jill Howie (Kraig) and Julie Johnston (Mike), and a loving grandfather to Kayleigh (Aaron), Conor (Alaina), and Katie (Dylan). He was also a cherished great-grandfather to Maeve and Ronan.
Dennis built a career that began in banking, taking him from Sudbury to Wingham and ultimately to Sarnia, where he and Waverly married and made their home. He later transitioned into a career in sales, retiring from Frito Lay. Together, they raised their daughters, Jill and Julie.
In retirement, Dennis and Waverly split their time between the family cottage on Arran Lake and winters in Florida, where they enjoyed golfing and built many lasting friendships. Dennis was happiest at the cottage, surrounded by family, friends, and neighbor’s. Though fishing rarely went his way, he never lost his enthusiasm for it. Many days were spent golfing, sharing stories, and enjoying time with those he loved most.
He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
The family extends their sincere thanks to the staff of Landmark Village, where Dennis and Waverley made their home in recent years, for their care and support. They also wish to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff and volunteers of St. Joseph’s Hospice Sarnia-Lambton for their compassion and kindness, which brought comfort to Dennis and allowed for meaningful moments with his family in his final days.
As an expression of sympathy, donations to St. Joseph’s Hospice Sarnia-Lambton would be appreciated. A private family celebration will be held at Arran Lake, by the campfire.
Sympathy may be expressed through donations to (cheques only at the funeral home please).
