County-led initiative focuses on rethinking traditional long-term care through a more supportive, home-like environment.

A new fundraising campaign is underway in Lambton County to support an innovative expansion at Lambton Meadowview Villa, a long-term care home in Petrolia.
The county has launched a $1.5 million campaign aimed at enhancing a 12-bed “small house” addition currently under construction on the site. The project, approved by the province in 2025, is expected to open in December and will focus on residents living with moderate to severe dementia.
The small-house model represents a shift from traditional long-term care design. Instead of larger institutional settings, residents will live in a smaller, home-like environment with private bedrooms, shared living spaces, and consistent caregivers. Daily routines will be shaped around residents, with an emphasis on familiarity, autonomy, and reduced stress.
Construction of the addition is already funded through a combination of reserves, borrowing, and provincial support. The build carries an estimated construction cost of $9 million, along with $1.4 million in planning and design and a contingency budget of $1.7 million.
However, rising costs during the tender process required adjustments to the original design. Some features, including elements such as gardens and enhancements to the living environment, were scaled back to keep the project within budget.
The fundraising campaign is intended to restore and expand those elements, with a focus on improving dementia-specific supports within the home. Funds raised will go toward specialized furnishings, adaptive design features, outdoor gathering spaces, technology to support safety and independence, and staff training aligned with the small-house care model.
The project comes at a time of growing demand for dementia care. More than 770,000 Canadians are currently living with dementia, with numbers expected to rise significantly in the coming decades. Locally, the majority of long-term care residents in Lambton County are affected by the condition, placing increased pressure on existing systems.
The small-house approach is designed to respond to those challenges by creating a more supportive and personalized environment. Research and similar models suggest benefits such as improved quality of life, reduced behavioural distress, and lower rates of infection compared to traditional care settings.
The Meadowview Villa expansion is expected to be the first of its kind in Ontario focused specifically on dementia care within a small-house framework.
The fundraising effort is being led through an online campaign and outreach to community donors. County officials say community support will play a key role in delivering the full vision for the project and setting a new standard for long-term dementia care in the region.
