A local group of 15 women from the Honourable Malcolm Cameron IODE Chapter has spent the last two months providing critical kitchen infrastructure and meal support to Sarnia’s unhoused community.

The Honourable Malcolm Cameron IODE Chapter is proving that a small group of dedicated women can provide a massive boost to Sarnia’s most essential social services. Their recent efforts reflect a deep commitment to addressing the immediate needs of neighbours facing housing insecurity.
With only 15 members, the local chapter has spent the last two months focused on the city’s unhoused population. Their contributions include a donation to fully equip a kitchen for Habitat for Humanity. This ensures local families have the necessary tools for long-term stability and nutrition.
During the recent Coldest Night of the Year walk, the group provided homemade soup, snacks, and drinks for participants. This hands-on approach continued at the Inn of the Good Shepherd. Members worked in the kitchen to prepare lunch for those relying on the shelter’s services.
These actions highlight a core reality in Sarnia-Lambton where grassroots volunteerism provides the glue for a struggling social system. While local institutions work on policy, groups like the IODE provide the tangible support that keeps residents fed. Their work exposes the weight of the housing crisis through direct action.
The chapter’s commitment reflects a clear understanding of the stakes facing unhoused individuals in our community. By targeting nutrition and housing infrastructure, these 15 women are making a direct difference. Supporting such independent local efforts is a vital part of building community resilience.
