Here again, The Journal’s “Humans of Sarnia” story about Aline and Jorge Rocha’s migration to Canada — much like Maitte Martinez’s journey from Cuba — reminds us how fortunate we are to live in a country like Canada. Their experiences highlight the responsibility we all share to stay vigilant and to act, especially at the ballot box, when our democratic institutions and human rights come under threat.
A newly released global report on democracy now places the United States on the edge of authoritarianism. When people allow personal beliefs to justify taking away someone else’s rights, that erosion accelerates. Protecting the rights of all people, even when we personally disagree, is how we strengthen and preserve our own democracy.
