Thinking of running for council? Lambton sessions aim to guide candidates

Residents in Lambton County considering a run for municipal office this fall will have an opportunity to learn more about what the role entails at a pair of upcoming information sessions later this month.

The sessions are scheduled for Wednesday, March 25 at the Lambton County administration building on Broadway Street in Wyoming. Two identical sessions will be offered, beginning at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., with each expected to run approximately two hours.

Organized collaboratively by municipalities across Lambton County, the sessions are designed to give potential candidates a clearer understanding of the responsibilities, expectations and day-to-day realities of serving on municipal council ahead of the Oct. 26 election.

Attendees will receive an overview of how municipal government operates, including the legislative framework that guides council decisions, the administrative structure supporting local government, and the accountability and transparency requirements tied to public office. The sessions will also explore how these formal processes can differ from public expectations, and the level of scrutiny that often comes with serving in an elected role.

The sessions will be led by Nigel Bellchamber, a longtime municipal administrator with experience as a clerk, treasurer, commissioner of finance and administration, chief administrative officer, and consultant. His presentation will focus on helping prospective candidates understand both the challenges and rewards associated with municipal leadership.

Local municipal staff will also be involved, with preliminary candidate information packages expected to be available for those in attendance.

Participation is open to members of the public, including those who may still be undecided about running. A virtual attendance option is also available, with advance registration required by emailing [email protected].

The nomination period for candidates in Ontario’s municipal elections is set to open May 1 and close Aug. 21.
