Surrounded by those he loved, Irvin Hawkes passed away suddenly in Fort Myers, Florida. A lifelong resident of Sarnia, he lived a life defined by devotion, curiosity, creativity, and a deep appreciation for both people and the quiet beauty of the world around him.

For nearly 60 years, Irvin was the beloved husband of Mary (née Badali). Together they built a life rooted in love, family, and adventure. He was a proud father to Sheryl (Herbert) and David (Amy), a devoted Papa to Jordan (Kassy), Xavier (Brad), Nathan, Isabella, and Lily, and a cherished great-grandfather to William, Ashton, Harper, Cooper, and Wren. He is also survived by his sister Marilyn and a large extended family he held close to his heart. He was predeceased by his parents, Gweneth (Davies-Williams) and Lorne “Red” Hawkes.

Irvin was a man who loved to build things—homes, gardens, meals, and memories. A true DIYer, he helped build the family home and spent a lifetime renovating, repairing, and improving spaces, generously passing those skills on to his children.

In retirement, his creativity flourished. An award-winning watercolour artist and active member of Sarnia and Fort Myers art associations, Irvin was drawn to hidden country roads, weathered buildings, and overlooked places. He believed that broken didn’t mean ugly—it meant you had to look deeper to discover what made something special.

His creativity took many forms throughout his life, including stained glass, macramé, and handcrafted birdhouses. Irvin was also an excellent cook who took great pride in hosting family and friends, and creating thoughtful, gourmet menus.

An avid traveller, Irvin spent many winters in Fort Myers, Florida, and explored the world with Mary through extensive travel, the 'back-roads', and countless cruises. He especially loved planning trips and sharing those adventures with family, including several unforgettable cruises taken together.

A lifelong golf enthusiast and member of the Sarnia Golf and Curling Club and Huron Oaks Golf Club, Irvin was a true outdoorsman who also loved hunting, fishing, and canoeing—always happiest when immersed in nature.

Above all else, Irvin was deeply passionate about his family. He loved hosting gatherings, learning about family history, and took great pride in compiling a family tree that brought connection and joy to many. Always humble, kind, and willing to help, he spread his love of learning and his fascination with the world around him with everyone he met.

He will be profoundly missed, but the way he saw the world—with curiosity and full of wonder—lives on in those who loved him.

Rest in peace, Papa.
