Urgent call for volunteers as Sarnia Ribfest prepares to return to Centennial Park

Sarnia Ribfest organizers are looking for volunteers to help with setup and takedown ahead of the June 19 to 21 festival at Centennial Park.

With Sarnia Ribfest quickly approaching, organizers are putting out an urgent call for volunteers to help bring one of the city’s major summer events to life.

The annual festival returns to Centennial Park from Friday, June 19 to Sunday, June 21, with award-winning rib teams, live music, family-friendly entertainment, vendors, refreshments and community fundraising. But before the crowds arrive and the grills fire up, organizers say volunteers are needed to help with the important behind-the-scenes work that makes the weekend possible.

Help is especially needed for setup during the daytime from Tuesday morning through Thursday, as the park gets prepared for rib teams, vendors, seating areas, entertainment and guests. Volunteers are also needed for takedown on Sunday evening, beginning around 6 p.m. and continuing until dark. Some additional help may also be needed Monday.

The most critical day currently needed for volunteers is Thursday June 18, the day before the event.

Those interested in volunteering for setup or takedown can contact Henry at [email protected].

Ribfest has long relied on community support, with volunteers playing a key role in transforming Centennial Park into a full festival site. Their work helps ensure the event can safely and smoothly welcome thousands of visitors over the three-day weekend.

This year’s festival will feature five rib teams: Route 55 B.B.Q Team, Boss Hog’s, Oak 87, Jack the Ribber and Bubba Lou’s. Guests can expect ribs, pulled pork, barbecue chicken, sides, sauces, live entertainment and refreshments throughout the weekend.

The event will also include a full music lineup. Friday’s performers include Retrospect, The Fealers and Johnny Five. Saturday will feature Wayward Saints, That Rock Show and Under Cover. Sunday’s lineup includes Atomic Hearts, Cornerstone, the Celtic Hillbillies and The Martones.

Along with food and entertainment, Ribfest will continue its community fundraising focus. Rebound will be on site Saturday selling tickets for a chance to win a Mustang, while Bluewater Health will be selling tickets Friday and Sunday for a chance to win a BMW.

Organizers say Ribfest is not only a summer festival, but also a community effort supported by local volunteers, non-profits, vendors and residents.

This year’s event also marks a milestone for longtime organizer Jack Struck, who is celebrating his 50th anniversary with the Kinsmen. Jack has been helping organize Ribfest for 27 years, and became chair in 2012.

As the countdown begins, organizers are encouraging anyone who can lend a hand to step forward. Even a few hours of help can make a difference in getting the site ready and helping the event wrap up smoothly.

Sarnia Ribfest runs Friday, June 19 and Saturday, June 20 from 11:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., and Sunday, June 21 from noon to 7 p.m. at Centennial Park.
