Original Lightfoot musicians to bring 50 years of history to the Imperial Theatre

The Lightfoot Band, featuring core members who toured and recorded with Gordon Lightfoot for decades, arrives in Sarnia this April to perform the legendary songwriter’s catalogue with its original arrangements.

The Imperial Theatre, located at 168 Christina St N, Sarnia, will host The Lightfoot Band on Sunday, April 19, 2026. The performance features the same musicians who served as Gordon Lightfoot’s backing band for nearly half a century, including drummer Barry Keane and bassist Rick Haynes.

This year’s tour holds particular significance as it marks the 50th anniversary of "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" topping the charts. Both Keane and Haynes performed on the original 1976 recording of the iconic Canadian ballad.

The band aims to perform dozens of Lightfoot’s songs exactly as they were played alongside the late songwriter. Their set focuses on the authentic sound and arrangements that defined the "Lightfoot sound" across decades of global touring and studio sessions.

Beyond the music, the performance serves as a living history of a Canadian institution. The musicians share unique behind-the-scenes stories from their time with Lightfoot, including the specific recording process behind his most famous hits.

Local interest in the tragedy of the Edmund Fitzgerald remains high, bolstered by the recent best-selling book The Gales of November. This connection to the Great Lakes and local history remains a cornerstone of the band's relationship with Sarnia-Lambton fans.

The Lightfoot Band emphasizes their role as stewards of this musical legacy. They position themselves not as a tribute act, but as the original creative partners who helped build one of the most respected bodies of work in folk-rock history.

Tickets for the Sunday evening performance are available through the Imperial Theatre website. The concert offers Sarnians a rare opportunity to hear these songs performed by the individuals who stood on stage with Lightfoot for 48 years.
