Theatre Sarnia is elevating local community theatre with a technically ambitious production of Singin’ in the Rain featuring a live 16-piece orchestra and a custom-built rain system at the Imperial Theatre.

Theatre Sarnia is preparing to launch one of its most ambitious productions to date this May, bringing the stage adaptation of the classic musical Singin’ in the Rain to the Imperial Theatre. The production promises to go beyond standard community theatre fare by featuring a custom-built rain system and a 16-piece live orchestra.
Set during Hollywood's transition from silent films to "talkies," the story follows stars Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont as they navigate the technical and personal chaos of a changing industry. The local production is led by director Henri Canino, with choreography by Jackie Burns and Hala Miller.
The technical centrepiece of the show is a specialized rain system designed by Doug Hakala. This engineering feat allows the cast to perform the title number under falling water directly on the Imperial Theatre stage. Executive Director Brian Austin Jr. noted that recreating the spectacle properly was essential to honouring the original film’s legacy.
Complementing the visual spectacle is a large-scale musical presence. Music Director Frank Brennan will lead a live 16-piece orchestra that will perform the iconic score on stage throughout the evening. Austin Jr. emphasized that the production highlights the depth of talent within the Sarnia-Lambton community.
By pushing both technical and artistic boundaries, the group aims to showcase the high calibre of local independent arts. The show features a hit-parade of classic songs and high-energy choreography designed to celebrate the history of both cinema and live performance.
Performances run from May 22 to May 30, including two matinee options. Tickets for the production are currently available through the Imperial Theatre box office.
