A conversation with Sarnia city and county council candidate John Richardson

Nathan Colquhoun sits down with John Richardson to discuss housing, policing costs, parks and how Sarnia’s decisions connect to one another.

I’ve been sitting down with people running for council for longer conversations about Sarnia and how they approach the work. This one is with city and county council candidate John Richardson.

John and I talked about supportive housing, making it easier to build homes within existing neighbourhoods, policing costs, transit and parks. I appreciated how often he connected those issues, and how much of his campaign has involved going out, asking questions and learning from people. We also got into recreation, public access to the proposed BASE facility and what he learned about invasive plants after making a video about local green spaces.

I’m also running for council, so my own views and experiences are part of these conversations. These are candidates I chose to sit down with, rather than a comprehensive interview series with everyone running.

Whoever gets elected will have to make decisions together. These conversations give people a chance to hear how candidates think beyond a campaign slogan, in the kind of discussion they might otherwise have over coffee.
