Sarnia has gained a new retreat for rainy afternoons and friendly competition. Cliffhanger Café newly opened at 1362 Lambton Mall Road, blends European café charm with the playful energy of a board-game lounge.
The space, created by the DeLorey family — Tina, Kaleb, and Karina — takes inspiration from their Danish roots. It embraces hygge, a quintessential Danish concept of warmth, coziness, and simple pleasures. Inside, soft lighting, wood accents, and the quiet shuffle of board-game pieces make it feel worlds away from the bustle outside.
The drink menu mirrors that comfort-first philosophy. I tried the Salted Caramel Latte, topped with whipped cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce. Sweet, rich, and undeniably indulgent, it’s not a daily coffee—it’s a weekly treat, best enjoyed slowly over a long conversation or a game of Scrabble.
The staff were as welcoming as the space itself—friendly, patient, and genuinely excited about the café’s concept.
For lunch, I opted for the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich on ciabatta. It arrived with a side of chips and a satisfying portion size. The sandwich had real flavour—crisp, mildly spicy chicken with enough sauce to keep each bite interesting. It’s the sort of elevated café meal that easily beats a drive-through option at Tim Hortons or Starbucks. The wait time was a touch long, but considering the café is in its early weeks, that’s forgivable—and the food quality makes up for it.
Beyond the food and drinks, Cliffhanger Café’s charm lies in its atmosphere. Shelves lined with more than a hundred board games invite guests to linger, and a small stage in the centre hints at the live music, poetry, and community events to come. The vibe is relaxed and inclusive—somewhere between a European coffeehouse and a local hangout.
Cliffhanger Café feels like a thoughtful addition to Sarnia’s café scene—one built on warmth, connection, and a good dose of fun. The drinks are decadent, the food is satisfying, and the people behind it care deeply about creating something special.
