Sarnia's own Angela Robertson is making a significant impact in the Fab Over 40 competition, a nationwide campaign dedicated to raising funds and awareness for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Robertson, a long-time healthcare provider from Sarnia, is currently holding first place in her grouping as the competition approaches the quarter-finals.

Local roots and a personal connection to the cause

A self-described "homegrown Sarnia gal," Robertson has spent most of her life in the community, with a brief period in London. For over 20 years, she has worked in the healthcare field, primarily in private home care. She currently provides homecare for a quadriplegic woman, who she describes as "one of my best friends".

Robertson's motivation for participating is deeply personal. While she was unaware the competition benefited the National Breast Cancer Foundation when she signed up, the cause quickly hit home. Shortly after registering, a close friend informed Robertson that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and would be starting her treatment journey.

"This competition means even more to me and my group of friends" now, Robertson stated. Cancer has always been a part of her family's awareness, as her grandmother had breast cancer in her 30s. Having watched dear friends go through the journey, she finds it empowering to see them "ring the bell, gain their confidence and change their mindset," recognizing the vital role foundations play in supporting the "background costs and wellness that we as outsiders don't see".

Giving back to Sarnia-Lambton

Robertson has strong plans for giving back to the Sarnia-Lambton community if she wins the grand prize, which includes a two-page feature in New Beauty Magazine and $40,000. She intends to donate to a local cat rescue, Cat Chance, from which she adopted her "fur baby," Otis. She noted that Cat Chance is "drowning in cats and kittens and what they do for our community is so hard but so meaningful". Additionally, she plans to make a direct donation to the local cancer unit here in Sarnia.

How to support Angela

The Fab Over 40 competition is determined by public voting. Sarnia-Lambton residents can support Angela Robertson through the following process:

  • Free Voting: Anyone with a Facebook account can vote for free every 24 hours. Voters must verify through Facebook to ensure they are over 18.

  • Paid Votes/Donations: Votes can also be purchased through a donation. All donations go to the National Breast Cancer Foundation and a tax receipt is emailed to the donor.

  • Double Vote Days: The competition also features "Double Vote" days where free votes or donations have double the value.

Robertson has suggested that supporters hold off on paid donations until the quarter-finals begin, anticipating the need for an extra boost in the next round. The quarter-finals are scheduled to run from November 24 to December 4. Semifinals run from December 5 to 11, and the finals from December 12 to 18. All vote counters are reset to zero with each new advancement in the competition.
