A call to honour WWII veterans by ending Canada’s ‘complicity’ in Gaza

Dear Editor,

My Mom and Dad both served overseas during the Second World War.  Professional school graduates and newlyweds, they postponed plans to build careers and start a family in order to fight global fascism.

My parents would be dismayed at the rise of ethnonationalism, authoritarianism, militarism and conflict around the world, and they would be devastated at Canada’s ongoing support for belligerent, fascist Israel.

Canadian entities – including government bodies, corporations, universities, charities, media, and other cultural institutions – have enabled and continue to enable the settler colonization and genocide of Palestinians.  Under the genocide convention, as well as domestic law, Canada is obliged to take all reasonable actions within its power to stop Israel's assault on Gaza. Instead of upholding our legal responsibilities, however, Canada continues to be complicit in Israel’s crimes by maintaining strong military, political and economic ties.
