AMO offering workshops for urban Indigenous residents considering municipal office

A free workshop series is being offered this spring for urban Indigenous people considering a run in the October 2026 municipal election, with sessions running April through June.

The Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) is hosting a series of free information sessions aimed at supporting urban Indigenous people who are thinking about running for municipal council in the 2026 election.

The workshops are designed to provide practical guidance on how to become a candidate, build a campaign, and navigate municipal politics with confidence.

Participants will hear directly from experienced Indigenous leaders, including Melanie Pilon, Mayor of the Municipality of Wawa and a member of Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory, and William Morin, a member of Michipicoten First Nation and founder of the First Peoples National Party of Canada.

Sessions will cover topics such as the importance of Indigenous representation in municipal governance, strategies for running a successful campaign, and approaches to leadership that reflect cultural integrity.

Upcoming virtual session dates include:

  • May 6 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
  • June 3 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The workshops are free to attend, but registration is required.
