A 26-year-old Sarnia man has been arrested in connection to a weekend theft and assault at an LCBO that sent a 75-year-old Red Cross volunteer to hospital, police say.
The incident occurred around 2:25 p.m., Saturday, at the LCBO on Quinn Drive, where a male suspect had allegedly stolen two bottles of alcohol.
“As [the suspect] fled the store, a volunteer collecting donations for the Red Cross, attempted to prevent his exit,” police said in a news release. “The 75-year-old volunteer was pushed and then tripped by the suspect, causing him to fall and strike his head.”
The victim was taken by ambulance to hospital where he received multiple staples to his head.
A news release issued over the weekend resulted in a number of citizen-generated tips, police added, which led to the arrest of a 26-year-old male suspect on Sunday.
The accused is charged with aggravated assault; theft under $5,000; and wearing a disguise with the intent to commit an offence.
“The age of the victim (75) is a significant factor in determining the charges laid against [the accused] as the strike to the victim’s head could easily have endangered his life,” police added.
“[The accused] was also bound by a Conditional Sentence Order at the time of these offences. The allegation of breaching the conditions of this sentence have been initiated as it is a process of the court and not a new charge against an accused person.”
The accused had a video bail hearing on Sunday, December 17 and was remanded into custody. He was scheduled to appear in video court again Monday to determine the bail process.
The victim has since been released from hospital to continue his recovery at home.
