New leader takes helm as federal NDP looks to rebuild support, reconnect with voters, and redefine its direction across Canada.

The federal New Democratic Party has selected Avi Lewis as its new leader, marking a shift for the party as it works to rebuild its presence on the national stage.
Lewis was chosen by party members at a leadership convention in Winnipeg on March 29, receiving majority support and stepping into the role during a period of significant challenge for the NDP.
A journalist, filmmaker and activist based in Vancouver, Lewis campaigned on addressing economic inequality, strengthening public services, and advancing climate policy. His platform includes proposals such as implementing a wealth tax on Canada’s highest earners, tackling housing affordability, and expanding public options in areas like transportation and pharmaceuticals.
The leadership change comes at a time when the party is attempting to regain footing in Parliament. The NDP currently holds fewer than the 12 seats required for official party status in the House of Commons, and recent polling has suggested the party is facing challenges in reconnecting with voters.
Lewis now faces the task of rebuilding the party’s national profile, strengthening its base, and expanding support across regions with differing economic priorities, including those tied to resource development.
Locally, the NDP candidate for Sarnia–Lambton–Bkejwanong is Lo-Anne Chan. Chan has lived in Sarnia since 2012 and is a graduate of Western University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in criminology with a minor in psychology.
With new leadership at the federal level, the direction of the party may shape how candidates like Chan position themselves in their communities as the NDP works to re-establish its footing across the country.
